Parallel 38: Our First Year Thank You

Justin Ross - Thursday, November 13, 2014

Well, we’ve almost made it. The end of our first year is in sight and we figure now is as good a time as any to take stock, thank everyone for their support and take a look at what is on the horizon here at Parallel 38.

The highlight of our year was without a doubt our trip to New York and the opportunity to put on dinner at the James Beard House. That amazing experience was bookended by a couple of accomplishments, which were just as humbling. Right before we left for New York The Washington Posts' Tom Sietsema snuck into Parallel 38 with local restaurant critic C. Simon Davidson and said some kind words. Then, upon our return, we found out the community was honoring us by voting Parallel 38 the Best New Restaurant in C’villes’ annual Best of publication. Our wine list was voted runner-up to Dean Maupin and his excellent team at one of our favorite spots in town, C&O.  We can’t express the amount of gratitude we feel towards everyone who helped us make this year such a great success but we can definitely try.

First off we would like to thank the community for supporting us. We’re proud to live, work and hail from such an amazing place. (I moved out here 8 years ago to visit some family and never left, enough said.) Secondly, we would like to thank all of the fantastic local vendors that work with us from Clay and Linda at Autumn Olive to Mark at Planet Earth Diversified, James, Holly and Cassandra at Whisper Hill Farms, the Charlottesville IRC, which is doing amazing work, Gary at Twin Springs Farm, Mark at Sharondale, the fine folks from The Rock Barn and Mi Tierra.

Then we have all the fine folks that grease the social and creative wheels in the valley. Thanks to the brewers: Champion, Three Notch’d, Star Hill, Devil’s Backbone, Blue Mountain, Parkway, Old Bust Head and Hardywood. The cider makers: Dan and Tim at Potters and Diane at Foggy Ridge abd the winemakers: Early Mountain, Blenheim, Stinson, Ankida Ridge, Willowcroft and Michael Shaps. Lastly, we want to thank all of the incredibly talented people that work in the industry around town. As the saying goes, “a rising tide lifts all boats,” and the tide is definitely rising.

Turning our attention towards the future: We’ll be continuing our Charity Cocktail program this month by donating a portion of proceeds from the sales of our Pumpkin Margarita to Hospice of the Piedmont. It is also that time of year when people might be nominating restaurants in the area for the James Beard Awards. If you are reading this hopefully you are a fan of what we do and maybe you would like to let The JBF know. Maybe someone else in the area is doing something that really excites you; let them know about that too. Keep an eye out for news on our New Years Eve/One year anniversary celebration. Again, thanks for all your support.

We hope to see you soon.

Rocca Vineyard's Wine Tasting Dinner Thursday April 10th

Justin Ross - Wednesday, March 26, 2014

On Thursday April 10th, Parallel 38 will welcome Mary Rocca, owner of Rocca Family Vineyards from Napa Valley CA for a special wine tasting dinner. Mary and her team’s limited production wines and farming practices have garnered praise from consumers & connoisseurs. Guided by the closely connected twin goals of sustainable and organic farming brings the vines into long-term natural balance with their environment, and produces intensely flavored, balanced wines that express the personality of the land that bears them.

Mary will join P38’s owner and Sommelier, Justin Ross to introduce a selection of wines from Rocca Family Vineyards.  Rocca’s wines are both highly acclaimed and sought-after. Years of accolades in the press including ratings of 94 points from Wine Enthusiast, and Double Gold Medals, have established Rocca as one of the industry’s finest wine producers, and we are very happy to have her join us.

Wednesday Wine Tasting Dinner

Justin Ross - Monday, March 03, 2014

On Wednesday, March 5th, Parallel 38 will welcome Eva Benito Perez, head winemaker for the Viña Real winery, located in the Rioja Alavesa region of Rioja, Spain for a special wine tasting dinner and happy hour event.

Viña Real was founded in 1920 by Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE), and was one of the first brands to produce age-worthy wines in the Rioja Alavesa region from Tempranillo. The wines are produced from grapes grown in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa province and boast balance and elegance while combining New World fruit intensity with Old World style.

Eva will join P38’s owner and Advanced Sommelier, Justin Ross to introduce a selection of wines from Viña Real and CVNE. CVNE is one of the most important wine producers of Spain. Founded by the Real de Asua brothers in 1879, it remains family-owned and family-run, with the latest generation committed more than ever to making great wine in meaningful quantities.

P38 is offering two ways to participate in this special event. Reserve a seat for the intimate 6-course, all-inclusive wine dinner with Eva for $95 (11 seats available) starting at 7pm or come to the happy hour event from 5-7pm to meet Eva and taste her wines, available for a discounted rate, “by-the-glass”.

The Wine Happy Hour is open to anyone but not included in the dinner and will be priced.
